Moments of Before

"Moments of Before" tells the story of a 16-year-old girl and her father as they grapple with the question of what it means to preserve life through their respective passions for photography and taxidermy. Through these contrasting mediums, the story delves into the philosophical questions of memory, loss, and the meaning of existence. lt conveys a profound message: life's essence cannot be captured and prolonged into eternity.

I hosted a film viewing party screening the film with the organization Frame x Femme, with a group of 30 attendees, followed by an engaging discussion. It was an opportunity to connect with the audience’s personal experiences to collectively delve deeper into the film’s themes.

Critics Feedback:

The film is concise and direct in its expression. By showcasing the differing interests of the father and daughter, it highlights the "distance" and "misunderstanding" in their relationship. This represents the daughter’s struggles during adolescence and the father’s middle-aged concerns. The daughter’s monologue and the final shot of the father-daughter photo symbolize the "reconciliation" in their relationship, captured in a tender frame without unnecessary prolonging.

The short film’s composition is clean and clear, with a warm color tone that significantly enhances the sense of realism and intimacy, allowing the audience to feel a connection to the everyday life depicted. Coupled with a gentle voiceover, it instantly pulls the viewer into the girl’s family perspective.

A big theme is conveyed through a small lens, using the everyday moments of family life to spark deep reflection in the audience beyond the screen.
